The Ocean is My Only Medication

Currently on repeat, this song reminds me that it was just ten days ago that I was on the greatest ocean vacation ever.

(Related: I guess this means I like country music now? I mean, I don’t, but the Zac Brown Band is kind of awesome. Discuss.)

I Am My Hair

I’ve been working out a lot more lately. It feels good, and heaven knows I have the time (super regular hours at the *new* job). I’ve also taken the cue from Lucy Actually and started running. Right now I’m on week four (I repeated week three two times) of the Couch to 5k. But really, more on all that later.

Anyway, since Lady Gaga’s latest album leaked, I’ve been OBSESSED with it. It is, without question, the best soundtrack for any cardio workout. I can’t get enough of 90% of them, but my recent obsession has to be “Hair.” The lyrics are a little weird, but you know… Lady Gaga is weird. So it makes sense. And I promise you – there is nothing better than running hard, having my long ponytail swing from side to side, sweat flying (sorry, treadmill buddies) and hearing:

I’ve had enough,
This is my prayer,
That I’ll die livin’ just as free as my hair…

It makes me feel invincible.  I highly recommend you download this record at your earliest convenience.

In the meantime, check out Lady Gaga’s slowed-down performance with a bald head. Brings another level of hotness to an already hot song:

I just wanna be free,
I just wanna be me,
And I want lots of friends that invite me to their parties.
Don’t want to change,
And I don’t want to be ashamed,
I’m the spirit of my hair,
It’s all the glory that I bear.

I know, I know… it’s not a shock that I’m pimping out Lady Gaga. Clearly I’m one of her biggest fans. But lady gives good music.

Straight No Chaser: The 12 Days of Christmas

A cappella at its greatest:

I freakin’ love these guys. I even blogged about them roughly this time last year. They’re just down-right full of vim and vigour and have pizzazz flying out of the mouths each and every time they perform this holiday hit.

What a treat.

Do yourself a favor and put it on repeat. I did, and it’s making all the difference in my day.

You can learn all about the group on the website – do stop by. You can hear some other songs they perform, follow them on facebook, twitter, and myspace, and take all sorts of new-media actions. Which, natch, I was all over.

The Hamilton Mixtape by Lin-Manuel Miranda

It’s kind of outstanding and is certainly everything a political/pop culture geek like me loves. Lin-Manuel Miranda, he of In the Heights fame (also fab – not that I’ve seen it, but it killed on the Tony Awards and it’s forever been on my list of things to see), is kind of my new obsession.

From Lin-Manuel Miranda’s YouTube page description:

My performance at the White House Poetry Event, courtesy of WhiteHouse.gov. This is the premiere of a new song from The Hamilton Mixtape, my next big writing project. It’s a hip-hop concept album about the life and death of Alexander Hamilton. I’m accompanied by Tony/Grammy-winning genius Alex Lacamoire. It was one of the highlights of my life to perform for The President, The First Lady and the First Family. I’m so grateful to the White House for making it available. Enjoy.

How great is that? A hip-hop concept album about the life and death of Alexander Hamilton! GENIUS. I can’t wait until this project is ready for mass consumption. It’ll be like Sarah Vowell books for my ears and entertainment.
