Happy Thanksgiving 2011

Minnesota Wild Turkey

When I was in Minnesota a couple of weekends ago, I was struck by the amount of nature I saw everywhere. Examples:

  • When I checked my iPhone’s weather app for “weather in St. Paul, MN” – I delightfully proclaimed, “It’s going to snow!” (<– I can say that because I don’t have to survive the long, cold Minnesota winters.) AU and SW were doubtful, so when I showed them, they said, “Uh, Molly… those are stars.” My bad. WE DON’T SEE THE STARS IN BALTIMORE. Nature 1, Molly 0
  • We had to pull over the car not once, not twice, but THREE TIMES so I could take a picture of the wild turkeys! I still can’t get over seeing them just chillin’ out in the wild. Makes me think of being in Martha’s Vineyard and driving back and forth to capture pictures of my first-wild-turkey sighting ever. No idea why this makes me so happy, but it does. Nature 2, Molly 0
  • When I went for a run around Como Lake in St. Paul, I saw a real live beaver in the water. Again – probably not that amazing to most of you, but I live in Baltimore. If it’s not a rat, we aren’t familiar with it. Nature 3, Molly 0

Nature wins.

Turns out, I’m kind of an animal-lover-in-the-making. Besides, what better day to share one of my wild turkey pictures than Thanksgiving Day? Gobble gobble.

I made a sweet potato casserole, and I’m really hoping that the family enjoys it. They never let me cook, so it’s a big deal this year, even though it’s a simple recipe (BTW – I added rum, vanilla, and maple syrup… so, not so skinny but who cares?)

Happy Thanksgiving, all! My advice, adapted from Michael Pollan: Eat food, not too much, mostly TURKEY.

Minnesota Nice

(I did not take this photo.)

Guess where I’m going today? HINT–>

Yes! Minnesota. Aside from a quick layover in the airport, I’ve never been before.

I can’t wait to see my friendSW – her two adorable Boston Terriers, lovely fiance, and experience a healthy dose of Minnesota Nice. Do you think I’ll bump into Garrison Keillor?* I SURE DO HOPE SO.

If you’re been to and/or are from Minnesota, what are some must-dos? Must drinks? Must sees? Must eats?

*This reminds me: RIP to Tom Keith. Man, did I enjoy his sound effects.
