Martin Luther King Jr. Day, 2011

As we all pause today to remember the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., I’ll leave the commentary to those that are better qualified. Instead, I’ll share one of my favorite quotes, and the video that played throughout DC during President Barack Obama’s inauguration in 2009. Those days, that time in our country’s history – that is something I will never forget. And the cynic in me would do well to remember how I felt back then, harness that hope, and draw the necessary parallels to one man’s powerful legacy.

“Human progress is neither automatic nor inevitable… Every step toward the goal of justice requires sacrifice, suffering, and struggle; the tireless exertions and passionate concern of dedicated individuals.” – Dr. Marin Luther King, Jr.

Say what you want about the over-abundant use of celebrity in the video and the mildly cheesetastic graphics. The message is strong, and beautiful, and Dr. King’s words (beginning at 3:50) spoken with his vocal fortitude still give me chills and hope today. Things have changed, but we have so far to go, and we would all do well to listen and respect each other just the slightest bit more.

Let’s keep that in mind as we enjoy this day off from work (for those of us that are federal employees), serve our communities, and wonder if the banks are open or not.
